KNOW YOURSELF - Is blogging really for you? If you don’t know the answer to that question you might just end up frustrated. Do you have what it takes to survive the grind? What do you really expect to get from it? What are your motivations? What do you do when you get frustrated?

Knowing yourself is the very first step to this long, arduous, and endless journey called blogging. Last year I stared this blog. After a few weeks I was frustrated and I threw my password list out the window. I started blogging for fun. Things are less frustrating then. Then I begin toying about the idea of probably making money off it. So I started blogging for money. Building sites, buying domains and stuff means hard work and the money you spent are hard earned, so when you don’t get the results you want it gets really frustrating. I tried to forget all about for almost a year but the challenge is just too hard to resist because I knew deep within me that I have what it takes to make it. So I tried looking for my password list outside the window but it wasn’t there any more, luckily the guys from my host have it. J. Now I actually earned enough from this blog to pay for my hosting this year and perhaps the years to come.

As I have mentioned with my other article, Blogging is not for the weak hearted. Before you wade through the waters, ask yourself; can I do this? The answer is, yes! But you have to believe it as well.

KNOW YOUR BUSINESS - In this case; know your blog or better yet, know your niche. There are a lot of articles out there teaching us to blog about niches that we know nothing about and why they do it. They begin blogging about the topic by asking one question and from that question sprout other question and so on. They look for answers to these questions and write them out on blogs. This could work, but it is a lot easier for start-up bloggers to write about things they are familiar with.

Think about it, while you are promoting your site and building your readership, there will be some readers that would ask you some questions, some shallow questions but some would really be complicated. How will you answer their query? You cannot just reply to comments and say; let me get back to you on that. The way you answer comments tells a lot about you and what you know. While you’re building your readership you are building your reputation at the same time. If you are known as someone who doesn’t really have the answer that could really reflect on you.

HAVE A PLAN - If you fail to plan you plan to fail; this line has been there for a very long time and it’s still there. It’s still being spoken, still uttered and written. Why? Because it’s true. As simple as that. Every business needs to have a plan, unless of course you plan to fold from the very start.

Where do you want to go next? What is your target? These are valid questions that needed to be dealt with. Where will you take your blog next? Set goals for yourself. Simple goals will do. When I started this blog I checked its status with alexa religiously. I check the traffic rank every other day. My alexa traffic rank started so high (what do you expect, right?) I would say I was ranked maybe around 35, 000, 0001 or something. So my first goal then was to break to the 30,000,000 and below mark. It may not be much but it’s an improvement. You get my drift when I mentioned goal setting? Plan for each day and what you need to do next when that plan or goal is achieved.

KNOW YOUR COMPETITION - Study your competition? Their success and failures are information that could be very valuable to you. What makes them tick? What keeps people coming back to their blogs and what information you can learn from them?

Your competition could be your greatest ally when it comes to blogging especially when you are blogging about a very crowded niche. Study their blog with an open mind. Don’t look for faults because it is hard to see one especially when they are right. Learn from what you read, they have ideas that you may not have thought about. If you feel strongly about what they wrote, you could leave a comment on their blog and tell them why you do not agree, and then write about your argument more extensively on your blog. The possibility is that, when you disagree, other commenters might click on your backlink, when this happens, they will see your extensively written blog and understand your point better. Now they may not agree with you but that means you got their attention and you got traffic.

You can also check the keywords that they are using. There are a lot of programs out there that you could use to check the keywords that they are using. You could possibly use it on your next article but you need to be careful with it. If you use the same keywords, you better make your article a lot better than what they have because if you are not offering other ideas and you just use the keywords just for the heck of using it then you better not use it at all. Seize your every opportunity to educate others.
